‘Indonesia Calling: Joris Ivens in Australia’, continues John Hughes’ wise, educated passion for the contemporary role of history, in that fascinating space in which the documentary creates events, and then becomes the history of them. He was interviewed by Catherine Gough-Brady.

John Hughes prefers that his films are viewed in a cinema. But the trouble with that is his films are deeply layered, finely researched film texts. The more complex the ideas being given to me, the more I like to linger and dwell, to think through what is being proposed. There is no pause button in a cinema, and that is the trouble I have with Hughes’ love of the theatrical experience for his work.
