Oscars 2017 – key Australians sign righteous letter

The real world has been leaking into Tinseltown, carried on the daily news, the shambles about visas, the films which document the horrifying attitude to refugees, and a pervasive sense that a personal stand does count.

The makers of The White Helmets, the short documentary about Syria, were so messed about by their visa problems with Syria, Turkey and the US that they never arrived. Asghar Farhadi, the Iranian director of The Salesman may not have been granted entry and chose to stay away as an act of protest.
