Prime Video’s God of War adaptation is swiftly progressing, as Ryan Hurst (Sons of Anarchy, God of War Ragnarök) has been officially cast as the titular hero, Kratos. With a history of playing tough, bearded men across a variety of popular franchises, Hurst certainly looks the part – and what’s even more notable is that he’s very familiar with the God of War franchise.

Ryan Hurst is already part of the God of War franchise

In 2022’s God of War Ragnarök, Hurst actually voiced Thor, working alongside Santa Monica Studio. While taking the role of Kratos is entirely different, it’s likely his experience with the franchise, and his past performance – which earned him a BAFTA nomination – informed his casting.

When Hurst takes the reigns as Kratos, he’ll have a significant responsibility on his shoulders. As previously announced, Sony Pictures and Amazon MGM Studios have already agreed on an early two-season order, suggesting great faith in this God of War adaptation.

Given the recent success of other major Prime Video game adaptations, including Fallout and Secret Level, it appears there’s high hopes for God of War, and how it will serve its audience.

What we know about Prime Video’s God of War

Beyond the casting of Ryan Hurst, and the show’s two-season order, there’s plenty we already know about Prime Video’s God of War and its overarching ambition. It’s been in development for several years now, with disparate updates along the way, suggesting slow and steady progress.

Ongoing development has been overseen by writer, showrunner, and executive producer Ronald D. Moore, who is most known for his work on Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Outlander, and For All Mankind. With Hugo, Peabody, and Emmy Awards under his belt, he’s a sure hand with ample experience.

Per details revealed by Deadline, Moore’s adaptation of God of War will be directly inspired by the modern God of War games. Kratos will travel a magical, god-filled world alongside his son Atreus, with this father-son dynamic defining the overarching story and ‘heartbeat’ of the show.

Given Prime Video’s adaptation will be overseen by Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions (as well as Tall Ship Productions and Amazon MGM Studios), we expect it will be a relatively faithful adaptation of the game source material, with a view to expand this story, and add new layers of depth.

For now, it’s best to stay tuned as more news is revealed. We expect additional casting announcements shortly, as full production begins.

In a post shared to social media, the archivist shared they had recovered a cache of documents that had been stored in deleted sectors of an old HDD, with these revealing more about the game and its progress.

While previously unknown – likely thanks to strict NDAs surrounding the Batman license – word of a Monolith-developed Batman video game spread around 2019, thanks to the DidYouKnowGaming YouTube channel. In the years since, a variety of leaks have been reported, with many revealing new tidbits about what this project was intended to be, and how it would’ve tied into the Dark Knight video games.
