Behind the scenes at Planetary Chaos

ARTS HUB AUSTRALIA — Kate Welsman - or Systa bb as she is otherwise known - tells us why, 15 years after she first stepped into a PBS studio, she still can't get enough of broadcasting, and about the creative urge that fuels both her radio work and her music.

ARTS HUB AUSTRALIA — Most people don’t think of women being music addicts. Your usual idea of an anorak lurking in second record stores, being able to quote arcane knowledge about bands and who would happily pass up eating for a purchase of that elusive vinyl, CD or trawl the net for new mp3s is that of a young dude scuttling down the road with a crazed grin on their face happy in the knowledge that they finally have THAT cut. My name is Kate Welsman (Systa bb) and I am that person.

I produce and present a show called Planetary Chaos on PBSFM and have been messing with the airwaves for the last 15 years. The show is about worldy, dub, reggae and other music forms that compete for attention in my head. They call me a volunteer, though I gotta say volunteering to have access to a microphone and broadcast my favourite sounds seems more like a privilege than anything else and when I started this journey I had no idea that this act would lead me to DJing, writing event management or anything else. Its been a wonderful ride and I aint done yet!

About the Author
Kate Welsman (Systa bb) has been at the forefront of global and electronic music since she started broadcasting on PBS in 1992. Her first DJ gigs were with the groundbreaking “Global Village” in 1993, the club that spawned so many imitators. Then there is her writing. From The Age to Rhythms magazine to on line publications she takes the opportunity to put out the words that drive the industry and prove that the music she is passionate about including electronic global fusion, dub and traditional beats is of interest to many many others.
