The nomination is for a story Ali directed, shot and co-produced for ABC1’s ‘Hungry Beast’ called ‘The Gang of 49’: The Gang That Never Was’.

Between 2007 and 2010, the South Australian and national media ran more than 200 reports about a gang of 49 Aboriginal youths on a crime spree, terrorising Adelaide with ram-raids, robberies and high speed chases. Thousands of crimes have been attributed to the gang, which South Australian Attorney General Michael Atkinson called “pure evil”. And yet the gang never existed.
