What’s on Screen: The Flip Side is an Australian rom-com. Can it cut through?

Australian rom-com The Flip Side gets a go in wide release, as Neighbours provides a cultural milestone and some great films wait quietly for your attention. Also some routine mid-range adventures.

This is a PR still for Magda Szybanski as the celebrant at the first legal gay wedding scene on Australian television. The show? Neighbours of course. The hive mind is happy.

Perhaps the most interesting release last weekend was Crazy Rich Asians, said to be aimed at the Asian market and best for Asian young people who understand what it feels like to be a minority. On number two, still in its PR phase, it hit 218 screens and made $8270/screen. That is a vote of confidence and we bet a lot of pale pink people will turn up as well.
