Born to a working class London family in February 1946, Alan Rickman was a successful stage actor, sonorous of voice and arch of delivery, who made the transition to Hollywood at the relatively late age of 41.
Announcing his death on Thursday, a family statement said: ‘The actor and director Alan Rickman has died from cancer at the age of 69. He was surrounded by family and friends.’​
