Ancestral Visions of the Future – 14 August
Film (2025). Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese returns with his most ambitious work so far. The Lesotho filmmaker, known for the extraordinary This Is Not a Burial, It’s a Resurrection, one of the most important African films of the last decade, has created a style that blends spiritual urgency with formal innovation. His films draw on oral tradition, shared memory, and the landscapes of southern Africa.

The Assistant – 14 August
Film (2019). The film follows Jane, a recent college graduate and the youngest assistant at a major New York film production company, through a single workday. She arrives before dawn and leaves long after dark. During her day, she files papers, cleans the office, books flights, and manages the schedule of a boss who is never seen but whose presence is felt in every room and every conversation.
Australian director Kitty Green crafts a film that works through subtle details and suggestion. Julia Garner’s performance shows the strain of working in an environment built on complicity and pretending not to know.
MUBI: recent highlights
Army of Shadows – 7 August
Film (1969). Jean-Pierre Melville’s film tells the story of a group of French Resistance fighters during the Occupation. Based on Joseph Kessel’s novel and filmed with Melville’s signature style, the movie is more about what it takes to survive and the price people pay than about war itself. Lino Ventura and Simone Signoret deliver powerful performances.
Jean-Pierre Melville Spotlight – 7 August
Spotlight collection. Masterpieces of crime from the French filmmaker who reinvented genre cinema for modern and modernist audiences. Emphasising ice-cool atmospherics, crisp cinematography, and outsider characters operating at the edge of the law, Melville’s cinema telescopes in on profound acts of rebellion – a body of work that influenced everyone from John Woo to Michael Mann.

Solo Sunny – 1 August
Film (1980). A landmark East German film by Konrad Wolf and Wolfgang Kohlhaase. It tells the story of Sunny, a singer in a struggling variety troupe, as she deals with love, independence, and the challenges of self-determination in the GDR. Renate Krößner’s performance, which won the Silver Bear at Berlin, is one of the great portrayals of a woman refusing to be diminished by her surroundings.
Linda Linda Linda – 1 August
Film (2005). Yamashita Nobuhiro’s film follows a group of high school girls who have only three days to learn and perform The Blue Hearts’ Linda Linda Linda at their school festival. The movie explores friendship, effort and the excitement of facing a challenge that feels overwhelming. Bae Doona stands out in her role.
A Useful Ghost – 24 July
Film (2025). Something unusual is happening at a family-run appliance factory: spirits have started to possess the products. March, the factory owner’s son, is grieving after his pregnant wife dies from dust poisoning. His world changes when he is reunited with her, now in the form of a vacuum cleaner.
A Useful Ghost is surreal, funny, and politically charged, using absurdist storytelling to explore love, grief, and collective memory.
It Was Just An Accident – 17 July
Film (2025). An auto mechanic, suspecting that a man he encounters may have been his former torturer in prison, kidnaps him in pursuit of vengeance. With the only clue to the suspect’s identity being the squeak of a prosthetic leg, Vahid seeks confirmation from other recently released victims. As the investigation unfolds, the situation becomes increasingly perilous.
Amores Perros – 10 July
Film (2000). Alejandro González Iñárritu’s first film is a powerful story that weaves together three lives connected by a violent car crash in Mexico City. One story follows a teenager who risks everything to run away with his brother’s wife. Another centres on a model who loses everything after moving in with her lover. The third follows a homeless man who confronts memories from his past. As these stories develop, we see chaos, cruelty, and tenderness, showing that the characters are more connected than they first appear.
Phantoms Of July – 3 July
Film (2025). Julian Radlmaier’s fourth film is a bittersweet and whimsical story that spans centuries in the German town of Sangerhausen. Ursula, a heartbroken waitress from East Germany, and Neda, a lonely Iranian YouTuber recovering from a broken arm, meet by chance and mistaken identity. Their encounter leads to an unexpected ghost hunt in the mountains, where the ghosts of history have a playful conversation with the dissatisfied people of modern Germany.
