This morning TVNZ’s Rick Ellis and Sky’s John Fellet fronted for a very friendly interview on TVNZ’s NZI Business about the launch of a new channel – and ducked some of the soft questions thrown their way.

The rationale behind creating the new channel – “to reach more New Zealanders in more ways with local content” – is warm and fuzzy. Nobody is likely to complain about there being more of New Zealand on air, but the idea seems potentially flawed, as a long-term strategy at least – not least because the new channel TVNZ Heartland will screen on Sky as part of its basic package.
