Screen Forever 2016: pros and cons of co-production

The topsy-turvy legalled-up logic of official co-pros is a challenge for the most exuberant producer - but here are the rules to get you through.

Image: the wonderfully daft Turbo Kid is an official NZ-Canadian co-production, produced by EMA Films and Timpson Films, and is seriously low budget. A sequel has just been announced. 

Two sessions at this year’s Screen Forever conference dove into the details of co-productions, and the lessons for producers remain the same as sessions held in past years: they have to make sense financially, they have to make sense creatively, you have to choose your partners carefully, and for the right project with the right people, they’re a great way to go.
