Thor: Love and Thunder trailer – Natalie Portman takes up the mantle

Marvel fans awoke to the new trailer for Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder dropping this morning – and it’s a doozy.

While it doesn’t seem to give too much away, the 1-minute-30-second trailer reveals some major details about the fourth film in the Thor franchise.

We open with Chris Hemsworth’s Thor doing some mighty soul searching: he sits atop a hill, bathed in orange sunlight while meditating. His hair is in a 2010s-style man-bun. ‘These hands were once used for battle, now they’re but humble tools for peace,’ he says as Guns N’ Roses Sweet Child of Mine plays. ‘Now I need to figure out exactly who I am.’

In the montage that follows we see the return of some well-known Marvel Cinematic Universe characters. Chris Pratt, Pom Klementieff, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel return as the Guardians of the Galaxy. Tessa Thompson is Valkyrie, swapping out battle gear for sensible suits as the king of New Asgard. Taika Waititi is back as Korg, the alien made of rocks. And yes, that is our first glimpse of Natalie Portman as The Mighty Thor.

Other confirmed cast members that did not make an appearance in the trailer include Russell Crowe (though he did recently let slip on Melbourne-based Joy FM that he had been ‘Zeusing about‘ on set – so it’s all but certain he is playing Zeus in the movie), and Christian Bale as the dastardly Gorr the God Butcher. The last omission is particularly interesting, as early plot synopses describe the film as a team up of heroes who go on ‘a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late’.

Thor: Love and Thunder was shot in Sydney during 2021, after repeat delays thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s a direct sequel to Thor: Ragnarok, Waititi’s debut directorial effort for the MCU, and also follows on from the events of Avengers: Endgame.

Taika Waititi tweeted the trailer out at 2am AEDT and joked that it was the entire movie. That would certainly make it the most efficient Marvel entry to date, and just perfect for the TikTok era.

Thor: Love and Thunder is released on 7 July 2022.
