The greenlight announcement came on Saturday afternoon NZ time, or just as everybody in Los Angeles was switching off their phones and heading out the door for the weekend. It confirmed a couple of points already widely rumoured or leaked, that Sir Peter will add directing to his existing duties, that the two films will be shot in 3D.
The announcement seemed to surprise a lot of people as the general expectation was that the studios would wait until MGM had a clear path back to solvency accepted by lenders. Still, nobody was complaining that the greenlight announcement has been made.
