Ten years on from Shaolin Soccer, Taiwan’s box office take for local films has increased 200-fold and even 3-fold over last year, on the back of blockbusters and festival favourites.

Last year Monga did the biz both locally and on the international festival circuit, turning attention back on the country’s output. This year, Wei Te-sheng’s Seediq Bale has repeated the success, coming on the back of his 2008 Cape No. 7, which holds the all-time box office record for a local film.
