Somewhere deep in every screen creator is a really sentimental person, who is now being let out to play. As the continuing voice of Screenhub I am realising that I get intense joy from younger people, and the sass and energy and insights they bring. On our pages we hope you have noticed bylines from Jini Maxwell, Anthony Morris and Mel Campbell, who are all stars in their own worlds and now writing about the screen sector for us.
Rochelle Siemienowicz is excellent at everything she writes about, and brings the deftest touch to editing I have seen for a long time. She redefines tact and certainty and has defined our reviews around an industry point of view.
George Dunford, our content director, brings the whole unruly gang of Artshub and Screenhub into a coherent, organised voice around the special rules of the internet. Over the next few months we are rebuilding the site, and part of his role is representing us, the people now called content creators.
There is a core of people in this organisation who you talk to on the phone but who don’t appear on the site. Their work exactly reflects the inner objective of our publications – to communicate about the relationship between imagination, skill and resources which defines success in the arts. They prove to me that sales, marketing, accountancy and leadership are art forms inside very disciplined rules, and I am awed by the way they create clarity from our fog of options.
Screenhub and ArtsHub are part of the same group, use the same internal architecture and cover the same human impulses. I am often amazed by the difference between our stories and readerships, but the ArtsHub side continually reminds us that our world is about people and not strategies, awards and company ownership.
Screenhub is a fascinating journey into a new form of communication and a sustained meditation on niche audiences. I am grateful that you give me permission to continue by reading and responding to this small, responsible, insightful and slightly zany publication.
We are all in the entertainment business.
Best wishes from us at ArtsHub and Screenhub for the festive break. Stay safe and cool. Treat motorised transport with suspicion.
