Lu Chuan’s City of Life and Death, about the 1937 Nanjing massacre by Japanese troops, has been pulled from the Palm Springs International Film Festival, in protest over the festival’s decision to screen The Sun Behind the Clouds: Tibet’s Struggle for Freedom.

According to The Hollywood Reporter’s coverage, the film was pulled by the state-run China Film Group, the largest producer and distributor of films in China, after festival director Darryl Macdonald rejected a request by Chinese government representatives to cancel the screening of the pro-independence documentary.
