“Bugger!” was not the word heard from Beijing as the date for compliance with the World Trade Organisation (WTO) ruling on opening up its market to foreign films passed on Saturday. In fact, no word was heard at all, and nothing changed.
The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), the drivers behind achieving the August 2009 WTO ruling, expressed disappointment but little more, their hopes and dreams of increased profit somewhat dulled by an announcement earlier in the month that China would probably miss the deadline.
