In the week ending 19 August, District 9 headed up the NZ box office takings in its first week of release. The Peter Jackson produced feature grossed over $825,000 on 50 screens, easily beating out second placed G.I.Joe’s $466,000 on 57 screens.
For other films with a Kiwi interest, the Christine Jeffs-directed Sunshine Cleaning, um, cleaned up almost $175,000 on 32 screens in its opening week. It placed fifth, one spot above Separation City. Paul Middleditch’s film of Tom Scott’s script did over $160,000 on 49 screens in its second week, taking its overall above $358,000.
