The first major trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has been released, revealing the film will directly adapt the events, worlds, and aesthetic of the Super Mario Galaxy games, as well as introduce one of their key heroes: Princess Rosalina.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie trailer – quick links
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie follows directly on from The Super Mario Bros. Movie
As the trailer begins, the stakes are set. Following the events of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Bowser is now a tiny denizen of a dollhouse castle, spending time painting portraits, and entertaining Mario and Luigi.
It appears this peace won’t last long, as Bowser Jr. enters the scene in this film. He’s the son of Bowser, who seeks revenge for Bowser’s treatment using a magical, transforming paintbrush (as seen in Super Mario Sunshine). In a spot of great casting, he’s actually voiced by filmmaker Benny Safdie, who’s most known for directing serious, Oscar-contending movies.
After a sudden star shower in the Mushroom Kingdom, the events of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie properly kick off. As with the games, it appears the action will begin when transportive Launch Stars appear, sending Peach and Toach into the stars, where spherical planets hang.
Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad will need to travel these planets in this adventure, likely in pursuit of the magical, mysterious Princess Rosalina.
Who is Super Mario‘s Princess Rosalina?

Rosalina is introduced at the tail end of the trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, as early Mario Galaxy boss Megaleg attempts to take her away from her castle fortress. Summoning her wand, Rosalina forces Megaleg to the ground in a massive explosion.
It appears, based on this clip, that Rosalina – like Peach before her – will be given a more active role in this film, with her star-powered abilities allowed to shine on the big screen. With big name actor Brie Larson (Captain Marvel) voicing her, we expect she’ll have an important role to play in the narrative.
Beyond her appearance in the trailer, it’s worth noting Rosalina has become a stalwart of the Super Mario franchise (and a fan-favourite) since her debut in Super Mario Galaxy. She’s essentially Princess Peach’s cosmic counterpart, as a princess from another galaxy.
Not only is she a princess, she’s also the adopted mother of the Lumas, who appeared in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. They will likely herald her arrival in this film, forming the necessary link between Mario and Rosalina.
For now, we’ll have to stay tuned to see what role Rosalina will play in the story, and how closely the film will follow the events of Super Mario Galaxy. In the meantime, the new character arrivals are worth noting. They speak to a grander, more ambitious adventure that seems to better adapt the Super Mario source material.
As previously announced, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is set to release on 3 April 2026.
