Resident Evil 5 remake rumours heat up, thanks to new ESRB listing

Resident Evil 5 could be next in line for a major remake.

The US Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB) has developed a certain reputation for revealing major new game announcements early. By nature, it’s one of the first ports for studios as they verify upcoming game releases. But the organisation hasn’t always hidden new, unannounced games, occasionally leaving them in the open for eagle-eyed players and journalists to spot.

Resident Evil 5 for modern generation consoles – possibly, a major remake – appears to be the latest game revealed by the ESRB.

What we know about the Resident Evil 5 rumours

The new listing was first reported by Kotaku, which noted a few key details that could indicate this new version of Resident Evil 5 is a remake, akin to the excellent, recent remakes developed for the Resident Evil franchise’s second, third and fourth entries.

First, the platform is listed as Xbox Series X/S – and while there’s no specific mention of PlayStation 5, PC or Nintendo Switch 2, this could still refer to a new generation game for all consoles, given Resident Evil is not an exclusive franchise.

The listing does also mention in-game purchases, which other re-releases of Resident Evil 5 did not have, as downloadable content was included in a single purchase. As Kotaku points out, this could mean developer Capcom plans to release a version of Resident Evil 5 with additional DLC, as with past Resident Evil remakes.

Now, much of this is based on assumption. It’s logical to assume Resident Evil 5 is in line for a remake, given past years have seen Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4 get this treatment.

But it’s also worth noting there have been further clues to a Resident Evil 5 remake announcement in recent months. In January, one of the game’s lead voice actors, Eva La Dare, posted about ‘a few fun things lined up in March’, with hashtags referencing her character Sheva Alomar and Resident Evil‘s 30th anniversary.

There’s also the matter of PlayStation recently announcing a 60-minute-long State of Play showcase, with the ESRB listing being discovered just a day later.

At this stage, nothing is confirmed, of course – but the listing, combined with recent teases, does lend some sense of hope for players keen to experience (or re-experience) Resident Evil 5 in new form.

Another Resident Evil remake could also be announced shortly

Beyond more teases for a Resident Evil 5 remake, there has also been strong rumours about another Resident Evil remake in recent times.

As ScreenHub previously reported, the next major Resident Evil remake could be a reimagining of 2000 spin-off, Code: Veronica. This rumour was surfaced by prominent leaker Dusk Golem, who claimed Resident Evil 5 Remake would not be announced in 2026, but that Code: Veronica would be.

Taking place after Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, this adventure follows brother-sister duo Claire and Chris Redfield as they combat an outbreak of a variant T-virus across the Antarctic. While the overarching plot largely focuses on Claire (and then Chris) fighting zombies in various states, it’s an important chapter of the Resident Evil story, and would have a key place amongst the modern remakes.

For now, this possible remake remains the subject of rumours, and nothing official has been announced.

Given both sets of teases, with conflicting information, there’s plenty of confusion about whether or not these games are actually in development, leaving them both as possible surprises for future showcases. For now, it’s best to stay patient until more is revealed.
