IKEA has teamed up with Bethesda Softworks for a very funny bit of new marketing: a major Skyrim mod introducing a companion known as the Kallax Storageborn, a white shelf, which is voiced by the legendary Matt Berry (The IT Crowd, What We Do in the Shadows).
The Kallax Storageborn mod is free and downloadable via the Bethesda Creations website. Players with a copy of Skyrim on PC and Xbox will be able to use this platform to nab the new companion, which can be discovered in a quest initiated in the Dwemer museum.
Per IKEA: ‘When you inevitably become encumbered, you shall be sent to a long abandoned Dwemer emporium. There, you will embark on a quest to unravel the origins of a mysterious master. As you progress the Dragonborn will be pitted against Tamriel’s ultimate adversary – clutter!’

After completing the quest requirements you will meet the Kallax Storageborn, and they will then accompany you on your travels. Matt Berry provides his dulcet tones in various snippets of dialogue along the way, but beyond delighting you, the Kallax Storageborn will be a useful companion otherwise.
As with all companions, it can store your precious inventory for you and in a nice twist, the Kallax will also change appearance to reflect any goodies you put on its shelves.
It’s a clever activation here, one made far better thanks to its odd timing and delivery.
Skyrim is a 15-year-old game. It’s not exactly on the cutting edge anymore. But it’s worth noting it does have a prominent mod community, and any bold or strange new mods are typically elevated for their meme potential.
Given the Kallax Storageborn mod has gone semi-viral online, IKEA’s odd bet on a partnership with developer Bethesda seems to be a good one. It’s solid advertising for the brand, as it continues to develop bright new ideas to promote itself.
In recent years, we’ve also seen IKEA joining forces with the likes of Nintendo and the Pokémon Company to share its products, and it also recently unveiled a special stool designed to resemble an Xbox joystick. It’s clear the marketing team is thinking outside the box here, or the shelf, as it were.
Those looking for a strong new companion in Skyrim with a kind and helpful heart should consider downloading the Kallax Storageborn mod to accompany their next adventure. It might be a brand activation, but with its good sense of humour and the talent of Matt Berry backing it, this crossover gets away with plenty.
