Pokémon Pokopia introduces new Pokémon variants, like Peakychu

Pokémon Pokopia is more than a cosy game spin-off.

A new, extended trailer for Pokémon Pokopia has revealed much more about what to expect of this upcoming cosy game, and how it’ll adapt the world of Pokémon for a new audience.

While the game’s debut trailer confirmed it would follow an adventurous Ditto looking to build a paradise, we now know much more about this journey and its purpose. We also know the game will feature an array of new Pokémon variants, as well as familiar faces.

What to know about Pokémon Pokopia

Entering Pokémon Pokopia, you’ll be greeted by Professor Tangrowth, an evolved Tangrowth who lives alone on a rural island. With your appearance, as a Ditto who takes human form, there is renewed hope for Tangrowth’s land, and how it may be transformed. So, working together, you begin to reshape this island, to introduce new life.

As outlined, this is accomplished by re-establishing certain terrains (grass, ocean, trees) or placing certain crafted items together (a rock, a fishing pole, a boxing bag). The combination of new terrain and items will attract Pokémon to the island, with some even teaching you skills that can transform the landscape further.

If you meet a Squirtle, it can teach you Water Gun, which is used to revitalise crops and trees. A Bulbasaur can teach you to grow grass. A Hitmonchan can teach you to crack boulders apart. A Scyther lets you obtain scythe arms.

Additionally, the trailer confirms Ditto can transform wholly into new Pokémon, including Lapras (for crossing water), and Dragonite (for flying across lands).

Using your transforming abilities, you’ll work towards creating your dream island, filled with grass, flowers, ponds, and other terrains, all of which will attract new, friendly Pokémon.

There appears to be elements of Minecraft in this design, with your Ditto able to travel far and wide, discovering new islands, and new Pokémon to befriend.

Pokémon Pokopia is home to new Pokémon variants

Another major surprise revealed in the extended trailer for Pokémon Pokopia is that as you build, you’ll encounter new, never-before-seen Pokémon variants. While each new Pokémon game tends to build on the franchise roster, the twist here is that you’ll find rare Pokémon who’ve seemingly been changed or shaped by their environment.

One of the new Pokémon is a Snorlax variant, known as Mosslax. It’s covered completely in moss, and appears to be a Snorlax who’s been asleep for so long, it’s become part of the local terrain.

There’s also Smearguru, which is a Smeargle covered in paint splats, presumably from becoming absorbed by its work.

Another major new Pokémon – likely to be the most popular of the bunch – is Peakychu, which is a Pikachu variant that appears pale and shy. There’s plenty of speculation this might actually be an Electric Ghost-type Pokémon, given its pale, glowy appearance. What we know for sure is Peakychu is adorable, with its droopy ears and wide eyes.

Pokémon Pokopia could be home to an array of other Pokémon variants like these ones, which is an encouraging thought. It’s always great to see new, more interesting Pokémon in new games, and the hunt for more will provide plenty of reasons to forge on through the wilds.

Pokémon Pokopia is set to launch for Nintendo Switch 2 on 5 March 2026.
