A new Neopets board game, Neopia Quest, is currently in development at Melbourne-based tabletop games publisher Ghostfire Gaming. It’s set to hit crowdfunding platform Gamefound in late March, to determine interest from a nostalgic audience.

For those who grew up playing Neopets, or those who enjoy bright, adventure-style tabletop gameplay, it should be worth watching this project as it advances.

As shared in the campaign preview, Neopia Quest is a co-op tabletop experience for one to four players, set in the magical world of Neopia. Players will pick from an array of iconic Pets and Petpets, and then take them on a journey through Meridell, Neopia Central, Tyrannia, the Haunted Woods, and beyond.

You’ll select a specific quest to tackle per gameplay session, with each featuring its own dedicated story, twists and challenges. In turns, you’ll use ‘action points’ to cross the board, with the goal of completing your latest quest, while collecting dice and other items.

Each quest is timed by turn, and you’ll need to complete it by ‘bedtime’, when the game ends.

There looks to be plenty of neat design choices here, particularly in the planned array of quests. Replayability is always a factor in exploration and story-infused tabletop games, and it does appear you’ll have a different experience every time you hop into this game.

Early looks at artwork and world design also suggest the experience will be heavily inspired by the Neopets website, making the board game feel very familiar for veteran players.

Neopia Quest also has one more thing going for it. It’s got strong design links to Adventures in Neopia, the original Neopets board game published in 2003.

In the early 2000s, at the height of the Neopets craze, you couldn’t escape the spread of this website’s merchandise. McDonald’s had a major crossover Happy Meal tie-in featuring plush toys and Petpet clips. There were other electronic toys, a card game, and more.

Adventures in Neopia attempted to bring Neopets to the world of tabletop gaming, with an adventure designed for all ages. It allowed players to explore Neopia away from the screen, and take part in various mini-games like Ultimate Bullseye and Poogle Races, while competing to have the most Neopoints (and the most glory). For many young players, it was their first experience of tabletop gaming, and an entirely transformative one.

With a similar premise, and an entirely familiar board set-up, Neopia Quest looks like a direct successor to this early adventure, with some modern tweaks. It’s expected to hit Gamefound later this month.
