Games platform GOG has been acquired by original co-founder and major shareholder Michał Kiciński, in a deal to ensure its future operations and longevity. As announced by former owner CD Projekt, Kiciński will lead operations going forward, with a view to continue GOG’s overarching mission of releasing DRM-free games that ‘live forever’.

The statement continued, ‘From the very beginning, GOG has always been built on strong values and clear principles,’ Kiciński said. ‘When Marcin Iwiński and I came up with the idea, the vision was simple: bring classic games back to players and ensure that once you buy a game, it truly belongs to you. CD Projekt and GOG share the same roots and values: freedom, independence, and a genuine sense of ownership.

‘When it comes to pure playability, timeless games often prove to be really the safe choice, especially in a market flooded with gazillions of low-quality smaller games. Beyond preserving classics, GOG has always sought out new games with a retro spirit,’ the announcement stated.

GOG will continue to champion timeless games

As shared by Kiciński, GOG will not divert from its primary mission under his ownership. Going forward, the games platform will continue to provide a space for DRM-free game releases from all eras, with a particular focus on providing access to older classics.

‘In a market that’s getting more crowded, more locked-in, and forgets classic games at an increasing pace, we’re doubling down on what only GOG does: reviving classics, keeping them playable on modern PCs, and helping great games find their audience over time,’ Maciej Gołębiewski, Managing Director of GOG said.

The games platform will also continue to support new releases from CD Projekt, including upcoming titles in the Cyberpunk and Witcher franchises, which are currently in active development.

CD Projekt will continue to support GOG as it becomes independent

For its part, CD Projekt has confirmed the evolution of its relationship with GOG, stating that while its focus will now shift to its ‘ambitious development roadmap and expanding [its] franchises with new high-quality products,’ it will maintain its support of the games platform.

‘For a long time now, GOG has been operating independently. Now it’s going into very good hands – we are convinced that with the support of Michał Kiciński … its future will be full of great projects and successes,’ Michał Nowakowski, Joint CEO of CD Projekt said.

‘We would like to thank the team for years of fruitful cooperation and wish them all the best. And to the community, I say “see you around,” because our upcoming releases will naturally be available on GOG as well.’

Per the company press release, Kiciński’s acquisition of GOG is now complete, concluding with his purchase of 100% of the shares in the company. Additionally, CD Projekt and Kiciński have agreed on a distribution deal that specifies ‘terms of future cooperation’ to ensure a fruitful partnership leading into the future.

On the surface, it appears relatively little will change for consumers, and that GOG will continue to operate as aligned with its original mission statement and values. Reading between the lines, this is a simple divestment for CD Projekt, as the company looks to refocus on game development leading into a new year, and beyond.

In the coming months, we expect to hear much more about what’s next for the studio, as it continues to develop The Witcher 4, and the next chapter in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe.
