IO Interactive’s 007 First Light has officially been delayed by two months, shifting from its initially planned launch in March 2026 to a new date: 27 May 2026. The news was announced ahead of Christmas, although it was largely swept away by the excitement and cheer of the holiday season.
In a post on X, IO Interactive confirmed that while the game is already fully playable, it requires more time for polish. For those who follow movements within the games industry closely, the language will be relatively familiar.

IO Interactive confirms delay for 007 First Light
‘007 First Light is our most ambitious project to date, and the team has been fully focused on delivering an unforgettable James Bond experience, bringing together breathtaking action, globe-trotting, spycraft, gadgets, car chases, and more,’ IO interactive said.
‘As an independent developer and publisher, this decision [to delay] allows us to ensure the experience meets the level of quality you players deserve on day one.’
‘The game is progressing well and is fully playable from beginning to end, so these additional two months will allow us to further polish and refine the experience, ensuring we deliver the strongest possible version at launch. We’re confident this sets 007 First Light up for long-term success, and we sincerely appreciate the patience and continued support we’ve received ever since we revealed the game. We look forward to sharing more updates regarding 007 First Light in early 2026.’
As far as delays go, this isn’t a particularly significant one. After all, gaming fans have spent the last year hearing about indefinite delays, and seeing highly-anticipated games delayed again and again.
There’s still a chance 007 First Light misses this additional window, but given the wording of IO Interactive’s statement, and the relatively short length of this announced delay, there is a suggestion of confidence the game will meet this new target.
What to expect of 007 First Light
When 007 First Light arrives, it’ll land as one of the first major blockbusters for 2026, setting the tone for the year ahead. Backed by the enthusiasm of the James Bond fanbase, and those who played and loved IO’s Hitman series, there’s high hopes for what’s to come, and how it’ll expand on the 007 story.
As previously announced, this game is a James Bond prequel that explores the spy’s early years. It’s territory that has been frequently charted in franchise spin-offs, but is fresh ground for the world of video games.
Given IO Interactive’s history and talent, we expect the Bond franchise is in good hands. For now, those keen to see what the studio’s been cooking will simply need to stay patient.

It’s been a difficult year to be a game developer. After significant growth over the early 2020s, the games industry’s upward trajectory stalled in 2025. The reasons are layered. Knock-on impacts of the pandemic era have led to significant inflation, while also shrinking consumers’ discretionary spending.
The market for attention is crowded. Making an impact requires a gymnastic routine of dodging competition, harnessing social media for marketing, arriving with a clear hook, and ever more steps that stretch into the horizon. In 2025, local Australian video game developers tackled these many challenges head-on, working to carve out a brighter future through any means possible, all while guiding unique, creative, endearing projects to launch.
