Santa Monica Studio is officially working on a brand new God of War game – and it’s a reimagining and remake of the original three God of War games, first released on PlayStation between 2005 and 2010.
That’s not all, as the studio also confirmed during the recent PlayStation State of Play showcase that it had been working on a new prequel adventure, a pixel side-scroller subtitled Sons of Sparta. It got a surprise-release during the show, and is now available for all players.

Everything revealed about the God of War Remake Trilogy so far
For now, Santa Monica Studio is playing its cards very closely to its chest, keeping a lid on details for the upcoming God of War trilogy remake. All it’s said so far is this remake will adapt the events of the first three games in the series, with a modern lens. It’s also confirmed the original Kratos, TC Carson, will reprise his role.
‘This project is still very early in development, so we ask for your patience as it will be a while before anything else can be shared,’ Grace Orlady, Lead Community Manager at Santa Monica Studio said on the PlayStation Blog. ‘When we can come back with an update, we aim to make it a big one!’
For now, all we can do is speculate about what’s in store, and whether the remake will make any changes to the original source material.
It’s worth noting the ‘Greek trilogy’ of God of War does contain some questionable explicit material, nudity, and graphic violence, that has since been criticised for its extreme tone. It’ll be most intriguing to see how these moments are reinterpreted, with more modern values in mind.
What to know about God of War: Sons of Sparta
As announced during the PlayStation State of Play, God of War: Sons of Sparta is another new God of War game that’s been in development, and it’s out now. It’s a co-development project between Santa Monica Studio and Mega Cat Studios, and charts a new era for the franchise.
While players are used to seeing Kratos as an all-powerful God, this 2D pixel platformer spotlights the hero in his days as a Spartan. The action is canon to the journey of Kratos in the rest of the series, and reveals more about his training at the soldier-forging Agoge, as well as his relationship with his brother, Deimos.
As with the God of War remake trilogy, Sons of Sparta also sees TC Carson reprising his role as Kratos, serving as the narrator of the game.
Those keen to jump into this God of War spin-off won’t have to wait at all, which is a nice surprise.
