Australian-made sandbox survival game Delverium from Sagestone Games will officially launch in Steam Early Access for PC on 22 September.

With over 80,000 wishlists and plenty of support for the upcoming game, the team has high hopes for what comes next, and the impact Deliverium could have on the ever-popular survival genre.

What to know about Delverium

Delverium began as a passion project for my family and me to play together due to our shared love of co-op gaming,’ said primary developer Scott Lowther.

‘With the help of a supportive community, Delverium has continued to grow into something special and we are excited to share our early access release date. We sincerely hope players appreciate the care and love that have gone into development, and help us continue to shape Delverium‘s future.’

As Lowther previously told ScreenHub, the game is a ‘mishmash’ of influences, with its direction inspired by Terraria and Stardew Valley. More important is that it’s guided by Lowther’s own passion for survival and farming games.

‘I’m just making the game I want to make,’ Lowther said. ‘The game I want to make is the game I want to play.’

He worked alongside friends and family to refine Delverium‘s direction, refining elements like co-op, adventuring, farming and combat through feedback. It was important to create an experience that felt good solo and in multiplayer modes, and development continued over a number of years with this goal in mind.

Support from Screen Queensland’s Games Grants and Screen Australia’s Games Production Fund helped Delverium expand to match this ambition.

What to expect from Delverium’s early access

Delverium enters Steam Early Access for PC as an ambitious survival sandbox fantasy adventure with support for up to eight players.

It’s described as a chance for players to create their own shelters, then journey forth through a magic world to find ingredients, fight monsters, create crop farms, and ‘push deeper into the unknown and uncover a dark secret’.

On launch, players can expect a ‘fully playable and highly polished’ experience comprising the ‘core gameplay loops, content and progression to enjoy the game’. There’s reportedly hours of content to explore, including split screen and co-op gameplay, fishing, cosmetics and support for multiple languages.

The game is planned to be in early access on PC for at least two years, with this time allowing Sagestone Games to add new content and refine existing features based on testing and player feedback.

‘The full game will have expanded content and features compared to the initial early access version,’ the announcement from Sagestone said. ‘We plan to keep adding more biomes, bosses, loot, NPC options, deeper lore and new gameplay features throughout early access. Depending on demand, we may also add additional language support.’
