The latest instalment in the Professor Layton series, Professor Layton and the New World of Steam, is set to launch for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 sometime in 2026, although a firm date remains out of reach, and new details are very scarce. After several delays, you might be wondering what exactly has happened to this upcoming sequel?
Level-5 is a very busy team, with a range of games currently in development. They include a spiritual reboot of Yo-kai Watch, known as Holy Horror Mansion; the mysterious RPG, DecaPolice; and new titles in the Inazuma Eleven franchise. That could explain why Professor Layton has been pushed back, and why news is slow on the ground.

As mentioned, Professor Layton and the New World of Steam doesn’t currently have a firm release date. It’s currently targeting launch in 2026, per a Tokyo Game Show trailer, but it’s worth noting the game was previously announced as a firm 2025 game, so this may not be certain.
Professor Layton and the New World of Steam: What’s the story?
Following on from The Unwound Future, The New World of Steam is a new chapter for the franchise and focuses on the reunion of detective Professor Layton and his apprentice Luke as they venture to the town of Steam Bison.
This is a town inspired by the United States – or at least, the idea of the United States. It appears very Texan in design, with plenty of cowboys to boot.
In Steam Bison, Layton and Luke discover strange, advanced steam engines and a society full of weird folks, including an antagonistic, a ghostly gunman known as King Joe.
Luke and Layton will work together to uncover the secret of a ‘mysterious incident’ in town, solving various puzzles along the way, while also dealing with new, seemingly supernatural threats.
Quiz design is handled by QuizKnock
One quirk of The New World of Steam is that the game’s quiz design will be handled by a group known as QuizKnock. They are best known for hosting a popular YouTube channel with various quizzes for viewers.
The person responsible for puzzles in earlier Professor Layton games, Akira Tago, unfortunately passed away in 2016 and was not able to contribute to this upcoming title.
Where does The New World of Steam fit in the Professor Layton timeline?
The Professor Layton series comprises two unique trilogies and multiple spin-off games that exist on a set timeline.

Spin-off Professor Layton Vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney seems to take place sometime before The Lost Future, although it can be played at any point.
There is also the Layton Brothers: Mystery Room spin-off, which follows a rookie investigator and a mysterious son of Hershel Layton. This game does appear to be canon, as it’s referenced in Layton’s Mystery Journey, but it exists furthest along the timeline and is not typically considered part of the main series.
Is Layton’s Mystery Journey canon to The New World of Steam?
This is an odd one. Following the conclusion of the Professor Layton prequel trilogy – which comprised The Spectre’s Call, The Miracle Mask and The Azran Legacy – Level-5 chose to move on from Professor Layton as the franchise’s protagonist.
Layton’s Mystery Journey, the latest Professor Layton game released prior to The New World of Steam, followed Katrielle Layton, the daughter of Professor Layton, as she embarked on her own mystery-filled adventures.
This game appears to be the furthest along the (somewhat messy) franchise timeline, and it will likely remain so when The New World of Steam launches. Given the young appearance of Layton in this game’s early trailers, it’s likely he hasn’t become a father just yet – and that Katrielle hasn’t been born by the time the events of The New World of Steam kick off.
Those players who skipped this title will likely be able to get the whole story from the original trilogy and its prequels.
When will we learn more about the new Professor Layton?
Beyond these key facts, we don’t know a whole lot about Professor Layton and the New World of Steam. Level-5 has kept plenty about the game under wraps, revealing very few details about what’s to come.
While we have seen a few trailers now, revealing new looks at Luke and Layton, as well as some of the citizens they’ll meet in The New World of Steam, there’s plenty that’s been left up in the air.
