“Here’s to the ones that dream, foolish as that may seem,” sings Emma Stone in the best new release film to reach Australian cinemas in 2016, La La Land — and how true her words prove to cinema fans. Outside of the sanctuary that is the darkened movie theatre, the world was a troubled place during the past twelve months, and will continue to be. Inside, once the lights dim and images start to flicker across the screen, everyday reality is replaced by sometimes hopeful, sometimes harrowing tales of a different kind.
