Image: It’s been a long journey for Mel Gibson. How many faces did he spot in the AACTA crowd, how many times did he give silent thanks for their work in setting him loose on the world?  

It was a real night for history and hyper-masculinity as silverback Paul Hogan was given the Raymond Longford Award for outstanding contribution to the Australian screen and Mel Gibson proved that he can now be trusted with a microphone again. It was also a time for predictable winners in the feature categories but some tight competition in television.
