Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic was announced with a flashy cinematic trailer at The Game Awards 2025. While there was plenty of excitement for the reveal – from fans of Star Wars and players nostalgic for the Knights of the Old Republic days – the hype around the new game quickly gave way to rampant, dour speculation.

Why Star Wars fans are reluctant to celebrate Fate of the Old Republic
Given Fate of the Old Republic was announced with a cinematic trailer, many began questioning just how early the title was in development and whether it should’ve been revealed just yet.
Discourse was set alight when prominent journalist Jason Schreier took to social media to make an ‘optimistic guess’ that this upcoming Star Wars game would launch around 2030, based on development timelines.
Schreier stoked the conversation by relating trailer reveals without proper gameplay, where the title had since been cancelled, pointing out that Monolith’s highly-anticipated Wonder Woman recently suffered this fate. After its cancellation, there’s now only a single cinematic trailer to note the idea for this game ever existed.
While Schreier’s comments weren’t definitive, they quickly spread online, with many keen players reconsidering their enthusiasm for the upcoming game.
Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic director pushes back on 2030 date
Eventually, the discourse around the release of Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic reached game director Casey Hudson himself, who stepped in to claim the 2030 ‘rumours’ were exaggerated, and that the game will release before then.
‘Don’t worry about the “not till 2030” rumours,’ Hudson said on X. ‘Game will be out before then. I’m not getting any younger!’
That was all Hudson shared, providing some level of reassurance for players keenly awaiting the game – but of course, ‘not till 2030’ still leaves plenty of room.

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic remains in early development
For now, it appears Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic remains in early development – too early for gameplay to be shown off, and for any tangible details to be released.
All we really know so far is that it’s designed as a spiritual successor to the Knights of the Old Republic games, and that LucasFilm Games is fully on board to support the adventure.
In a blog post on the official Star Wars website, the title has been described as a ‘brand-new epic narrative single-player action role-playing game’ where players will ‘step into the role of a Force user on a journey through a galaxy on the edge of rebirth at the end of the Old Republic.’
‘Blending innovative storytelling, memorable characters, and heart-pounding combat, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic will immerse you in an unforgettable experience where every decision deepens your journey toward the light… or the darkness.’
For now, it’s best to stay patient about what’s in development. While pre-2030 is a promising release date, there’s likely still many, many years to go before the game is ready for the public.
