Smash hit hockey romance series Heated Rivalry is coming to Australia cinemas, with a one-day marathon set to take place across the country on 5 December.

The event is a chance for the Australian fan community to gather together and celebrate the series in its entirety, with all six episodes set to air in five-hour-long sessions, with a brief intermission between episodes three and four.

Organiser Madman Entertainment says fans will be able to ‘return to the cottage, experience their favourite scenes on the big screen and celebrate the show’s infectious queer joy with other fans.’

The communal joy of cinema and Heated Rivalry

Heated Rivalry‘s celebratory cinematic screenings are a notable development, given current movements within the cinema ecosystem. Even as films and TV series overwhelmingly move to streaming, with the idea that people want to watch media at home, there is an increasing push for more real-world celebration, and a renewed appreciation for the shared viewing experience that can be found in the cinema.

Rather than enjoying cinematic moments alone, there’s plenty of folks who want to experience the shared joy and love that screen media can bring by watching shows and films in a cinema, alongside like-minded folks.

Cinema has become an experience. While this was largely started with blockbuster movie watching – films designed to be large scale, immersive and awe-inspiring for audiences – the desire to watch media together has also led to creations like the Heated Rivalry marathon, and cinemas hosting watch parties for beloved franchises like Twilight or The Hunger Games.

In a dark room, watching a movie together, you can feel a tangible bond with your fellow humans.

For Heated Rivalry fans, the show’s debut in Australian cinemas will be a chance to hoot and holler along with all the show’s biggest triumphs, and its spiciest moments.

University of Southern Queensland filmmaker and academic Katherine Chediak Putnam has revealed the establishment of new horror-themed screen project Crossroads, pairing six emerging filmmakers from Australia and Indonesia in a cross-cultural collaboration.

As part of the project, these practitioners – Queenslanders Sam Pates, Soren Jocumsen and Amy Parry, and Indonesian filmmakers Juan Jonathan, Aliyya Maryam and Ivan Mosqueta – have been working with experienced screen industry professionals as they develop horror short films exploring culture, folklore and identity. It’s all in service of building connections to support future collaborations between the Australian and Indonesian screen industries. As Putnam says, horror provides a ‘unique creative language’ for exploring cultural differences, through shared themes.

‘Horror is one of Australia’s strongest cultural exports, and the genre is highly popular with young Australian and Indonesian audiences. While the genre is expressed differently in each country – from the use of religion and diverse mythological traditions in Indonesian horror to the isolated and harsh landscapes often seen in Australian horror – themes such as fear, survival and family are universal.
