Mark Albiston and Louis Sutherland have picked up $25,000 from The Arts Foundation of New Zealand and Freemasons New Zealand’s New Generation Awards. The awards are given to artists in various disciplines, with this year’s other awards presented to writer Eleanor Catton, visual artist Ngaahina Hohaia, singer Anna Leese and theatre practitioner Kate Parker.

All the winners also received a $1,000 voucher from YooBee to purchase Apple gear. The New Generation Awards are funded by Freemasons New Zealand and are available to artists in the early stage of career with significant achievements and an exciting future ahead.

The recipients were selected, without knowing they were under consideration, by a Curator appointed by the Arts Foundation. This year’s Curator was Lynn Freeman from National Radio’s Arts on Sunday.

Freemasons New Zealand Grand Master, Selwyn Cooper, said with no apparent sense of irony, “For centuries Freemasons have had an association with some of the world’s finest artists, such as Leonardo da Vinci.”
