How Kiln’s developers found the joy of pottery and the ‘catharsis of destruction’

Double Fine Productions’ multiplayer party brawler Kiln started life as an internal game jam project. Lead designer Lauren Scott and lead character artist Jared Mills recently spoke to ScreenHub about Kiln‘s surprising journey, and the work it’s taken to get gameplay just right.

As Scott explains, developer and idea creator Derek Brand wanted to experiment with a video game that combined elements of gaming and art as a form of ‘creative catharsis’. As Scott tells it, Brand wanted to create a game where players could combine a love for art with personal expression, while leaning into a ‘catharsis of destruction’ often seen in multiplayer brawler games.
