Three years ago, a US Federal Trade Commission investigation into Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda revealed the existence of a possible Fallout 3 remaster, designed to update the fan-favourite game.
Since then, we’ve heard very little of this project, and it has been suggested the game’s listing could have been conceptual in nature. But a new report from The Verge disputes this, claiming the Fallout 3 remaster is not only real, it’s been in active development for quite some time.
Fallout 3 remaster rumours – quick links
What to know about the Fallout 3 remaster
Per these new details, the Fallout 3 remaster is reportedly a major upcoming release for Bethesda, with developers keen to ensure a high level of polish on launch.
The recent release of the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion remaster is reportedly being used as an example of what success could look like, as developers – including Bethesda’s studio head Todd Howard – were ‘really pleased‘ with its performance.
At this stage, that’s about all we know of the possible Fallout 3 remaster, but there are additional assumptions to be made.
What could the Fallout 3 remaster look like?
Given Bethesda has a penchant for re-releasing and remastering its games, from Skyrim to Oblivion, a Fallout 3 remaster certainly seems logical. That game released two console generations ago, and is starting to look its age, with muddy green and beige landscapes in need of a visual refresh.
A remaster would allow for much-needed improvements, enhancing the game’s exploration and providing new reasons to return. With past re-releases also including new content, from cosmetics to gameplay fixes, this could also be a chance to add in a variety of fresh elements, if only to attract returning players.
With the Fallout TV series becoming a breakout hit on Amazon’s Prime Video, the game could also attract a whole new audience, drawn in by the live-action depiction of wasteland drama and politics. A remaster could even be a chance to add new content inspired by the show, as with the Fallout 76 game, which recently recruited Walton Goggins’ The Ghoul for an appearance.
Fallout 3 has long been regarded as one of the best games in the Fallout series and unlike its nearest contender – Fallout: New Vegas – it was developed by Bethesda itself, likely meaning fewer rights issues or negotiations necessary to its remastering.
Should a major remaster be on the way, possibly for 2026, or even to fill in the gap between seasons of Prime Video’s Fallout, it would be welcomed with open arms.
At this stage, Bethesda is yet to confirm the existence of the game, but it’s possible we’ll hear more in the coming months, so stay tuned.
