The Super Mario movies have really perfected the art of stunt casting.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will feature the talented Donald Glover (Atlanta, Community) as the voice of Yoshi, per a recent final showcase for the upcoming film.

This showcase also confirmed the additions of Luis Guzman as Wart and Issa Rae as Honey Queen.

Glover, Guzman, and Rae join a wildly stacked cast for the film, which already includes the likes of Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Kevil Michael Richardson, Benny Safdie and Brie Larson.

Final trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie released

The final trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has confirmed a few elements teased in past trailers – like the appearance of Yoshi in the main cast and how the action kicks off.

It appears Mario, Luigi and Yoshi will take to the stars after Bowser Jr, the son of Bowser, breaches the Mushroom Kingdom to free his father from captivity. Princess Peach’s castle is torn out of the ground and abducted, alien-style, inspiring a heroic rescue through various planets and galaxies.

While the game is inspired directly by Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel – hence the appearance of bosses like Megaleg, shooting star portals and round planets with strange gravity – Super Mario Odyssey is also an inspiration.

The new trailer shows off a dinosaur, like the one spotted in the Fossil Falls level, as well as a casino-like setting that seems to be inspired by the Sand Kingdom. Guzman’s Wart appears in this casino, and he’s depicted as a boss of sorts.

Will Yoshi actually speak in the Super Mario Galaxy Movie?

While Yoshi is featured prominent in this final trailer, seemingly serving as a new companion to Mario and Luigi throughout their journey, what the trailer doesn’t reveal is whether Yoshi will actually speak in the film.

Yoshi makes noises, sure. You can hear little efforts and grunts as he makes his way through the world, and these will be familiar to game players. But Yoshi doesn’t typically speak in his appearances, which makes Donald Glover’s casting very curious.

If anything, we’d suggest the character will have an internal monologue in the film, and perhaps this is where Glover will shine. It feels likely Mario and Luigi won’t be able to understand the dinosaur, as is tradition, but anything could happen.

Whatever the case, it’s wild and very fun to see Glover joining the cast as Yoshi. The Super Mario movies have really perfected the art of stunt casting, with some big name actors, and some very left-field choices, joining the film recently.

To see how they all fare, keep an eye on The Super Mario Galaxy Movie as it heads to Australian cinemas on 1 April.
