How much the PS5, PS5 Pro and PlayStation Portal will soon cost in Australia

PlayStation's major price rise for the PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal consoles takes effect 2 April.
PlayStation 5 price rise australia globally

PlayStation has confirmed significant price rises for the PS5 and PS5 Pro consoles, as well as the PlayStation Portal remote player, as a result of economic pressures and the increasing cost of complex manufacturing.

Why the PS5, PS5 Pro and PlayStation Portal are getting more expensive

‘With continued pressures in the global economic landscape, we’ve made the decision to increase the prices of PS5, Pro and PlayStation Portal remote player globally,’ the company announced via PlayStation Blog.

‘We know that price changes impact our community, and after careful evaluation, we found this was a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide.’

This is the second major price rise for the PlayStation 5 suite of consoles in a single year, following a similar move in April 2025, as well as a prior hike in 2022. They are now significantly more expensive than when they first launched, despite the life cycle of these devices formerly necessitating price decreases to maintain interest.

The reality is it’s now more expensive to produce consoles, as the prices of components are rising. There are several factors contributing to this, including the blockage of major trade routes caused by the ongoing US-Israel-Iran war, as well as an increased demand for technology infrastructure to support new data centres for energy-hungry AI processing.

Amid the uncertainty, consumers are also spending less on non-essential items like gaming consoles, seemingly necessitating a higher price burden for those who do choose to purchase.

Anyone who might be saving for a PlayStation console purchase in the lead-up to big name releases, like end-of-year blockbuster GTA 6, or even major tie-in titles like Marvel’s Wolverine and 007: First Light, will now have a tougher time.

How much the PS5, Pro and PlayStation Portal will cost in Australia

Prices for PlayStation’s major consoles are rising globally on 2 April. Those in Australia can expect to pay the following prices:

  • PS5 – $999.95 (previously $829.95)
  • PS5 Digital Edition – $919.95 (previously $749.95)
  • PS5 Pro – $1,399.95 (previously $1,199.95)
  • PlayStation Portal – $389.95 (previously $329.95)

That’s a whopping price difference, particularly given the original pricing. When the PS5 first launched in 2020, it was just $749.95, and the Digital Edition was $599.95.

Even at that point, the price of the consoles was contentious. Now, they seem even more out of reach.

While those who already own a PS5 may be feeling comfortable about this announcement, it’s worth noting any new generation of console will likely be priced according to these inflated costs. With a necessary leap needed to justify to new, increased capability, could the long-gestating PS6 launch around the $1500 mark?

It’s certainly a possibility, and one worth considering as the price of technology continues to increase worldwide, impacting gaming fans exponentially. Unfortunately, we can expect to see similar announcements for other consoles in future.

Nintendo has confirmed pricing changes for its physical and digital Nintendo Switch 2 releases, set to be implemented from May, in line with the release of Yoshi and the Mysterious Book.

While any news like this is likely to raise hackles, after months of price increases across all aspects of life, there is a silver lining here. Nintendo is actually making digital prices cheaper, to incentivise players to purchase digitally, rather than keeping a physical collection.
