Marvel’s Wolverine, the upcoming video game adapting the popular X-Men franchise, is officially set to launch for PlayStation 5 on 15 September. The news was shared in a surprise post on social media, where developer Insomniac Games simply said, ‘Let’s cut to the chase.’

A new chapter for one of Marvel’s most popular characters

To date, we’ve already seen plenty of Marvel’s Wolverine, with various trailers teasing a intriguing new chapter in the Wolverine mythos. The character has been adapted many, many times in modern media, as one of the most popular Marvel heroes, with each new iteration putting some spin on his adventures.

In this particular game, Wolverine will travel solo through various global locations, seemingly including the fictional crime hub of Madripoor, on a mysterious quest. We know he’ll encounter an array of X-Men villains in this journey, including Mystique and Omega Red.

Beyond this, we also know Wolverine will be played by yet another Australian – Liam McIntyre, who’s best known for appearances in Spartacus and The Flash. He also voiced JD Fenix in the Gears of War games, so he’s got experience in the world of video game voice acting.

Given we now have a firm launch date for Marvel’s Wolverine, we do expect fresh details and a story breakdown in the coming months. We could also get confirmation of ongoing rumours the game will feature more of the X-Men, leading into some sort of team-up game.

Marvel’s Wolverine is far from the only big Marvel video game on the way

Notably, Marvel’s Wolverine isn’t the only big Marvel video game currently in development. It’s not even the only one in development at Insomniac Games, per reports.

It’s believed this studio also has a major sequel to its Marvel’s Spider-Man series in development – possibly the finale for a planned trilogy – and it’s also rumoured to be developing that aforementioned X-Men video game in future.

Arkane Studios is also working on a new Marvel video game: an adaptation of Blade. This title was announced in 2023, and is currently believed to be in full production. While there have been no significant updates since the announcement of its existence, we are likely to hear more about this title sooner rather than later.

In addition to these games, there are also a handful of other titles currently in development. Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, a second world war adventure starring Captain America and Black Panther, is in the works at Skydance New Media and Plaion. While it’s been delayed several times, it appears significant progress has been made over the last few years.

EA and Motive Studio are also reportedly working on an Iron Man game adaptation, although we haven’t seen any footage just yet, and the status of the project remains unclear.

For now, it’s a matter of watching and waiting to see when these projects will be formally revealed. In the meantime, those keen for their next Marvel video game fix will have Marvel’s Wolverine to look forward to this year.
