Prime Video’s Life is Strange adaptation

Prime Video has reportedly been developing this Life is Strange adaptation for several months now, as well as an array of other major projects inspired by video games.
Alongside Life is Strange, the team is currently adapting God of War, Tomb Raider and Mass Effect. It’s also developing the next season of the fan-favourite Fallout TV series, which has become a major success for Prime Video, and likely inspired this recent push.

Prime Video’s Life is Strange aims to be a faithful adaptation of the first game in the long-running franchise. Here’s the logline, per Variety: ‘[The show follows] Max, a photography student, who discovers she can rewind time while saving the life of her childhood best friend, Chloe.
‘As she struggles to understand this new skill, the pair investigate the mysterious disappearance of a fellow student, uncovering a dark side to their town that will ultimately force them to make an impossible life or death choice that will impact them forever.’

That aligns fairly well with the plot of the original story, although it’s worth noting that any adaptation will likely prove contentious, for the same reason a Mass Effect adaptation will be under scrutiny: both games involve player choice.
Any adaptation must choose one ending or another, ensuring this choice is entrenched in the franchise’s ‘canon’ whether that goes against player choices, or not.
Who else is involved with the Prime Video adaptation?
The script for the Life is Strange TV series is currently being written by Charlie Covell, best known for Netflix’s Kaos and the British black comedy series The End of the F***ing World. They will also serve as executive producer and showrunner.
Story Kitchen is also on board, with executive producers Dmitri M Johnson, Michael Lawrence Goldberg and Timothy I Stevenson contributing their expertise. Production companies include Amazon MGM Studios itself, LuckyChap and Square Enix – the publisher of the Life is Strange games.
This upcoming adaptation will ride a wave of renewed popularity for the franchise, pushed along by the next major game release, Life is Strange: Reunion. This title, which sees Chloe and Max returning to each other after a catastrophic, universe-changing event, will launch on 26 March.
For now, Prime Video’s adaptation remains undated. We’ll likely hear more news in the months to come.

Life is Strange: Reunion, a direct follow-up to Deck Nine’s Double Exposure, is a return to the franchise’s roots, but perhaps not in a way that players expected. After experimenting with a prequel adventure, as well as several major spin-offs, the franchise has now landed back at what made it so unique and compelling to begin with: the interplay between protagonist Max and her best friend (and potential romantic partner) Chloe.
