First Pokémon Lego sets revealed, including a large-scale diorama

The first wave of Lego Pokémon sets include Eevee and Pikachu figures, and a dramatic three-Pokémon diorama.

The first three Lego Pokémon sets have been revealed, after months of teasing. As expected, there’s a posable Pikachu figure in the lot, as well as an adorable Eevee. The flagship set is much more dramatic: it features Charizard, Blastoise, and Venusaur in battle poses, complete with elemental effects.

Anyone who pre-orders any of these figures will get a Lego Kanto Region Badge Collection set as a bonus gift (and this is technically the fourth official Lego Pokémon set revealed).

Our thoughts on the new Lego Pokémon sets

Overall, the revealed sets do a pretty good job of capturing the spirit of Pokémon, in Lego form. Eevee is particularly cute, with printed Lego bricks to represent the Pokémon’s unique facial features.

Pikachu is slightly blockier, with semi-circular bricks to represent the Pokémon’s chubby cheeks. This figure is particularly novel for its additional accessories. You can display Pikachu standalone, or pose it alongside a crackling Poké Ball.

The best set of the lot – and the most expensive – is the Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise diorama. There’s just so much life in this particular set, with tiny Lego bricks combining to form a flowing waterfall, flower-filled grassland, and a lava tower to support highly detailed Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise figures.

There’s so much about this set that works. You’ve got Charizard mid-flame, Blastoise shooting its water canons, and Venusaur whipping its vines. It really is a good-looking set, and one that should prove as satisfying to display as it is to build. You will, of course, need to fork out for that privilege.

Lego Pokémon: Australian prices and availability

In Australia (and reflected around the world), the new Lego Pokémon sets are fairly pricey. While we do expect there’ll be future sets with budget price points – looking to the Lego Animal Crossing and Super Mario series for inspiration – the first wave comprises premium items.

The prices for the Lego Pokémon sets in Australia are:

  • Eevee – AUD $99.99
  • Pikachu and Poké Ball – AUD $299.99
  • Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise – AUD $999.99

All three sets are currently available for pre-order on the Lego store, and will begin shipping within Australia on 27 February.

The price point for the Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise set is particularly breath-taking, although it can be explained away by the price of the Pokémon license, the detail included, and the large scale of this set. Still, the price is likely to be prohibitive for most collectors.

For now, those keen for smaller (or more affordable) Lego Pokémon sets should stay tuned. With a major partnership in place, we expect there’ll be plenty of other sets announced in future, likely featuring an array of other Pokémon.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is set for a major update on 15 January, introducing a new island location, new collectible furniture and a variety of improvements for those on Nintendo Switch 2. It arrives with perfect timing, to kick off the year in wholesome fashion – and I can’t wait for it to revive the New Horizons experience for a new and returning generation of players.

For those who weren’t part of the wave, it’s difficult to understand the magic of Animal Crossing: New Horizons‘ initial release in March 2020. Most of us will remember the dire state of the world. The Covid pandemic had begun and the first of the global lockdowns had begun, limiting everyone’s movement.
