The Indian video games market has reportedly grown significantly over recent years, with major year-on-year growth of 14.8% bringing its total revenue to AU$1.4 billion in 2025.

That report arrives courtesy of data and insights firm Niko Partners, which notes India is the ‘fastest-growing video game market’ among its tracked countries, with data suggesting it will continue to grow in future.

What’s changing in the Indian video games market

Much of this growth appears to be related to an increase in female players overall, with the firm noting that women made up 43% of all Indian video game players in 2023, and 49% in 2026.

Beyond this, the biggest growth driver is increased spending on mobile games, with analysis suggesting the expansion of digital adoption is contributing to this growth, as well as the rise of disposable incomes in ‘certain consumer segments’.

Niko Partners estimates the Indian games market comprised around 511 million players as of 2025, with this expected to reach 550 million by 2026 on current growth tracks.

The firm also notes that spending on video games is slowly becoming more diverse, with mobile games only being part of the overall market. At a smaller but notable pace, audiences are also turning to other PC and console experiences, with an increasing engagement for legacy PC titles as well as user-generated content platforms like Minecraft and Roblox.

It further noted Grand Theft Auto as being a particularly popular title, supported by livestreaming sessions on roleplaying servers. The interactivity and creativity that this game fosters was noted as being a driver in uptake and ‘especially attractive to digitally native consumers’.

Predictions for the Indian video games market in the next five years

Per Niko Partners, the Indian games market is expected to continue growing over the next five years, with current trends indicating increased uptake in gaming for both men and women in the country, and particular growth within the mobile games market.

There are five key trends identified as being influential to this continued growth, including an increasing engagement with genres beyond battle royale and casual games, increased engagement with those legacy PC titles, rising participation in esports and the subsequent growth of shared gaming communities, greater opportunities for publishers to ‘effectively target specialised player segments’ and perhaps most importantly, more support for gaming from both national and state governments.

As shared, there has been increased interest and investment into the Indian games market recently, with support helping to ‘transform’ the local industry.

The Indian government appears to be making inroads into supporting new screen and entertainment content more generally in recent years. For one example, in 2023 it formed a co-production partnership with the Australian screen industry to develop new projects together with financial backing. Since this was established, an array of co-produced projects have been released, including popular SBS series Four Years Later.

In its analysis, Niko Partners states this trend, alongside others, will shape the Indian games market in the years ahead, contributing to its growing popularity across various genres and platforms.

With growth continuing at a rapid pace, it seems likely India will become an increasingly important market for the games industry in the coming years, with publishers and developers encouraged to keep an eye on new happenings.
