What will the Elden Ring movie be about?
At this stage, a full breakdown of the Elden Ring film adaptation hasn’t been shared, although we can look to the game for clues about direction and tone.
For those unfamiliar, this 2022 game is a high fantasy RPG with lore co-written by Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin and prominent game director and designer Hidetaka Miyazaki of FromSoftware.
It follows a warrior known as the Tarnished who journeys through a realm called the Lands Between on a quest to repair the pieces of the magical Elden Ring – an artefact that holds the universe together – and ascend to the status of Elden Lord.
A significant part of the game is taking on hordes of towering monsters with near-impossible-to-survive attacks. Players must weather themselves and become hardier to achieve their lofty goals, becoming stronger with each defeated monster.
We expect at least the skeleton of this plot and lore will make its way into the film’s story.
Elden Ring film: full cast announced

A24’s Elden Ring will be led by an array of starry newcomers, as well as veteran talents. Kit Connor (Heartstopper) will seemingly play the lead role, likely that of the iconic Tarnished warrior.

Joining him will be Ben Whishaw (Skyfall, Paddington), Cailee Spaeny (Alien: Romulus, Civil War), Tom Burke (Furiosa: A Max Mad Saga), Havana Rose Liu (Bottoms), Sonoya Mizuno (Ex Machina), Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes), Ruby Cruz (Wilow), Nick Offerman (The Last of Us), John Hodgkinson (Napoleon), Jefferson Hall (Oppenheimer), Emma Laird (28 Years Later: The Bone Temple), and Peter Serafinowicz (How to Train Your Dragon).
What’s notable is the majority of this cast are English. This certainly aligns with the tone and performances in the Elden Ring video game – while the adventure is not specifically set in England, it evokes classic English storytelling and mythology, with many of its characters inspired by Arthurian legend.
As an added note, it’s nice to see Nick Offerman amongst the cast. He’s becoming a stalwart of video game adaptations lately, having recently won a Primetime Emmy Award for his appearance in HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us. He’s also set to appear in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, which reportedly adapts the events of video game Sonic CD.
When to expect more news of A24’s Elden Ring
With a starry cast now locked in, and production set to kick off shortly, we do expect to hear more about A24 and Bandai Namco’s Elden Ring film in the coming months.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, this will be A24’s biggest production yet, with filming set to take place over at least 100 days in the United Kingdom. While much of this process is likely to be kept hidden, we do expect to see some news and potential looks at filming locations in future.
Stay tuned for more on this upcoming film.
