Assassin’s Creed multiplayer game allegedly cancelled during Ubisoft restructure

New reports allege Ubisoft had quietly been working on a new Assassin's Creed spin-off.

A new report has alleged one of Ubisoft’s recently-cancelled game projects was a multiplayer Assassin’s Creed spin-off, codenamed AC League.

The allegations stem from French publication Origami (surfaced and translated by IGN), which further claimed the game was previously in the works as a DLC for 2025 release, Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

What we know about reported Assassin’s Creed spin-off, AC League

Per reporting from Origami, the game known as AC League was planned to feature four player-controlled assassins teaming up in feudal era Japan, to take on an array of bosses. Players would work together through scripted missions, charting a story allegedly designed to conclude Shadows‘ Season Pass storyline.

Origami claims initial plans for this project to be part of Assassin’s Creed Shadows were scrapped due to an expanding scope and ambition, with its ideas eventually reworked into a small, standalone release. This would reportedly use the assets and environments of Shadows, but feature entirely different gameplay.

AC League reportedly progressed to the point of being readied for an invite-only alpha in May 2026, but per Origami, this will no longer take place, and development work on the project has ceased.

While the website believes there could still be some hope for AC League, as some employees of Ubisoft Annecy have reportedly now been tasked with exploring new options for multiplayer modes in Assassin’s Creed, it appears there will be a fresh start for any related project.

AC League could be one of several mystery games cancelled by Ubisoft

Origami‘s report about the status of AC League remains unverified, but its alleged cancellation would align with recent, public announcements by Ubisoft.

In late January, the company confirmed a complete restructure, with many projects cancelled or delayed as a result of internal changes and shifting investment priorities.

A grand total of six games were cancelled outright, with only one being publicly confirmed: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Four unannounced games were cancelled, with three being new IPs, and one being a mobile title. Ubisoft did not confirm AC League as part of these cuts, although it would fit the profile.

At this stage, it’s unlikely Ubisoft will specifically confirm AC League‘s existence or development status, leaving this game the subject of rumours and speculation.

Despite its potential, it does appear the dream of a grand Assassin’s Creed multiplayer game is once again dormant. We’ll just have to wait to see whether this idea is resurrected in some form, in future.
