The actual process for starting a friendship is relatively easy, but fostering a love that leads to sweetheart status, or even marriage, is a more complex process.

The romance system in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream
Every interaction between your Miis allows them to get closer to one another and form certain feelings, either of friendship, romance or even dislike. How this turns out depends on multiple factors, including personality types and how they interact, preferred attraction, the impact of interactions and, seemingly, elements of chance too.
Some Mii personalities are more attracted to each other. Others will clash, creating awkward tension, but it appears you can get over this barrier with some determination.
To form a friendship between your Miis, you’ll first need to grab one of them and drop them near the other. If one Mii is doing an activity, they may be locked in and will ignore the other Mii. But if they’re wandering around or doing nothing much, they’ll usually make time to chat to your placed Mii, and a conversation will be initiated.
This conversation will eventually buff the relationship between your Miis, allowing them to grow closer – particularly if they talk about a shared topic they both like. The relationship may also grow between sessions of Tomodachi Life, as even when you’re not looking, your Miis will continue to go about their days.
Typically, repeated conversations will advance a relationship from casual acquaintances to ‘gets along’ and eventually to ‘best friends forever’ or other end points. Along the way, core moments and dialogues can inspire feelings of love and romance.
Miis can also come across this realisation as a yellow interactive thought. You’ll be able to ask them what they’re thinking about, and they’ll suggest they might have feelings for one Mii or another. You can decide whether that’s correct, and then send them on a whirlwind romance by constantly placing your Miis together in various scenarios.
The interactions that will change your Mii’s relationship status
There are a bunch of scenarios that will encourage your Mii to form a relationship with another Mii. The one that proved most impactful in my playthrough was waiting for a Mii to fall down – they get a halo of purple exclamation marks around them – and then sending a chosen Mii to pick them up.
As a gallant act, this frequently inspires romantic feelings, as one Mii is shocked by the other Mii’s actions, and then opens their heart to considering them as a potential romantic partner. It doesn’t always result in these feelings, but it seems to be an easy ‘in’ to get those first sparks started.
When one Mii develops a like for another, you can also work on the object of their affection, via interactions led by your in-love Mii. In certain funny cut scenes, they’ll encourage the other Mii to magically think about them, transferring their thoughts of love and romance. This isn’t always successful, but occasionally, it will open up a Mii to romantic reciprocation.
Other interactions that can spark a romance include having dinner at your island’s restaurant, interacting by the Ferris Wheel, and having Miis interact with another Mii while they’re performing a certain activity, such as playing guitar or knitting.
It’s best to think of your Miis as little action figures that can be bumped together. Every time they talk to another Mii, they’re forming new thoughts and strengthening their relationship. Eventually, if their personalities are compatible – among other factors – they’ll have their own epiphany about their desires, coding each new interaction with a layer of love.
Certain Miis will naturally be more drawn to the other, and you may not even need to push them together for them to form a romance. They may discover these feelings on their own, and you can simply encourage them to follow their wildest dreams.
When you look away, they might become sweethearts naturally, as a love for the ages forms.
