Girl Asleep wakes somnolent film sector

Moving from teen theatre to a fine feature, Girl Asleep blows a friendly raspberry at conventional Australian cinema. It was a journey full of joy.

The film of Girl Asleep is no ordinary remake of a theatre production. Greta, the central character, is cursed with a ghastly but hilarious expressionist family, bonds with the gormless Elliott at her new school, and brings ancient forest monsters to life when she sleeps. Realism, it is not.
