Okay, Melbourne is about sport. It is not possible for an arts ritual to come even close to the experience of a Grand Final queue, or the bizarre city-choking procession on the previous Friday.

But the launch of the Melbourne International Film Festival program is a teeny slice of the same joy. We are all among friends, we reach for a program with the same trembling fingers, we smile at the strangeness of some MIFF regulars.
