Cannes Film Festival 2010, the winner of the award for best director is….Mathieu Amalric for “On Tour”! Screening for a very limited season at ACMI in Melbourne from May 5th, Amalric’s feisty film offers a raw view into the world of burlesque, and of touring provincial French seaside towns.

Amalric himself plays Joachim Zand, a slightly dodgy impresario who has returned from the USA with a really rather excellent troupe of “new burlesque” performers. What he doesn’t have however, is the connections to top venues. This tension informs the whole arc of a very entertaining picture that’s also laced with melancholy for the past. The cast are actual performers, and the energy in the shows is infectious.

A noisy, sexy and heartfelt modern French picture, now showing in all its 35mm glory at Melbourne’s premiere cinema screen, ACMI. Season details here.
