British filmmaker Mike Leigh’s first period biopic since his Gilbert and Sullivan drama Topsy-Turvy (1999) has been met with acclaim by film critics at this year’s Canne Film Festival.

Mr Turner, about the life of English landscape artist J. M. W. Turner, premiered at Cannes this week, and has been widely praised.

‘Every scene in this film is expertly managed; every comic line and funny moment adroitly presented and every performance given with intelligence and love. It is another triumph for Mike Leigh and for [actor] Timothy Spall,’ wrote Peter Bradshaw in The Guardian.
