The inaugural Beijing International Festival of Film (BJIFF) threw the might of the party behind the opening party on Saturday night, after a week in which the party spent its time throwing its weight around elsewhere in the country.

The organisers, the State Administration for Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) and the Beijing City Council, made an impressive start to the proceedings, holding the opening ceremony in an indoor venue bigger than Eden Park and utilising the skills of a number of people previously responsible for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Olympiad.
