Screen Australia has opened its 2025 Screen and Games Industry Survey for submissions, calling on local game developers and creatives to share insights about their jobs. The data provided will directly inform the Screen Currency 2025 research project, which aims to help Screen Australia ‘better understand the workforce and income for people, businesses, and organisations working in the Australian screen and games industry.’
Ideal results will also allow Screen Australia to understand the current state of the creative industries in Australia, map those industries and their workforces into a ‘business value chain,’ and value the ‘benefits and dynamics of a viable Australian screen and games industry.’

What is the Screen Australia Screen and Games Industry survey?
Screen Australia is directly calling on ‘individuals working across the screen and games industries in creative, technical and key support roles’ as they dive deeply into the ‘economic, social, and cultural value of Australian screen and games.’
Those keen to participate will be asked to share the nature and focus of their current employment in a survey, as well as any insight into expenditure, export, trade and industry outlook for the future. Responses are confidential and anonymous, although participants can choose to share company names where they feel it’s appropriate.
Freelancers are also able to participate, with optional questions to ensure any relevant data can be captured. As noted by Screen Australia, all data shared is valuable, and will contribute to building a better overall picture of the screen and games industries.
While some survey results will be published in a public breakdown, Screen Australia has confirmed only ‘summary results’ will appear in future reports.
Why it’s important to participate in the Screen and Games Industry survey
As noted by Screen Australia, the Screen and Games Industry survey and attached study are designed to help create an accurate report about the current screen and games industries – how they operate, their economic value and the nature of employment within the industry.
Year on year, Screen Australia provides valuable funding, insight and opportunities for screen industry creatives, and it must have meaningful, accurate data about the industry to provide (and improve) that support.
Focussing on the games industry briefly, it’s been an incredibly tough year for local game developers. While we’ve seen major successes, in the release of titles like Hollow Knight: Silksong, we’ve also seen major studios shrinking due to financial challenges.
The creative landscape of 2025 is significantly different to that of 2024. Screen Australia’s latest survey aims to glean understanding about these changes, and how the organisation may step in to address them with future initiatives.
Those in a position to contribute to the survey – whether working freelance, in a studio, or solo – should consider providing their insight when possible.
