Pokémon Day 2026 brought an array of surprises for keen fans, including a brief first look at Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves, the next two mainline games in the long-running franchise. Picking up where Scarlet and Violet left off, these upcoming adventures will see players travelling to a new, tropical region, befriending one of three new starter creatures and presumably taking on a new, epic quest.

As announced during the latest Pokémon Presents – which also doubled as a celebration of the franchise’s 30th anniversary – we can expect these new games to launch in 2027.

What to know about Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves

Winds and Waves, like other dual games in the franchise, will tell similar stories, with light tweaks to mark them as separate experiences. Typically, each game has its own set of exclusive Pokémon, some exclusive characters and differences in colour scheme.

While this is an assumption, the first trailer for Winds and Waves did introduce two new versions of Pikachu – one wearing a tropical shirt and boater hat and another wearing a cap and two-piece shirt/skirt combo – and these could be exclusive to the separate versions of this upcoming adventure.

No matter which version you play, you will be able to pick from the same array of starter creatures and experience the same sights and sounds – tropical beaches, dense jungles, lava mountains, oceans and reefs teeming with life.

The starters of Winds and Waves

One of the bigger reveals in the new trailer for Winds and Waves was for the three new starter Pokémon that will accompany players on their adventures. They are Browt, Pombon and Gecqua.

Browt is a bird-like Leaf-type and resembles an angry baby chicken. Pombon is a Fire-type, which resembles a Pomeranian puppy. Gecqua is a Water-type, which resembles a lizard (and actually looks a bit like an animal from the Littlest Pet Shop series).

Based on chatter online, these creatures have been fairly well-received so far, with all getting an equal share of the love. That’s fairly rare for a new generation, as players are typically quick to scrutinise and pick favourites.

When will we learn more about Winds and Waves?

As confirmed, Game Freak is actively developing these new titles (alongside the upcoming, unrelated adventure game Beast of Reincarnation). We expect we’ll hear more towards the end of 2026, or perhaps even in early 2027.

In the meantime, there’s plenty to analyse in the first trailer for Winds and Waves, and plenty still to look forward to.
